Catching Up – By the Numbers

Graham & Alex at the helm in the Southern Ocean

Wow! What a crazy few months it has been. I thought I’d be able to write while in port, but that time quickly gets eaten up with victualing tasks, maintaining the boat, catching up with racer friends on other teams to hear their experiences, Clipper events, community events, and sleeping in a real bed!

Here is a little bit – by the numbers – about the first three legs of the race:

Legs Completed: 3 of 8

Races (Stages) Completed: 4 of 13

Miles Sailed: 16,579 nm of approximately 40,000 total nm (nautical miles)

Current Race Position: 3rd out of 10

Best Race Placement: 3rd Place (Stage 3: Punta del Este to Cape Town)

Oceans Crossed: Three (3) || Atlantic (north to south) || South Atlantic (west to east) || Southern Ocean

Strongest Wind Recorded on Our Boat: 62 knots (71 mph / 115 kmh)

Fasted Speed Sailed by Me: 27.3 knots (31 mph / 50 kmh)

Fasted Speed Sailed on Our Boat: 29.5 knots (34 mph / 54 kmh) (by Skipper Phil Quinn)

Largest Waves Sailed: approximately 6 meters (approximately 20′)

Ports Visited: Puerto Sherry, Spain || Punta del Este, Uruguay || Cape Town, South Africa || Fremantle, Australia

Favorite Crossing: Southern Ocean

Favorite Bird Spotted: Frigate

Least Favorite Crossing: The Doldrums

Number of Dolphins Spotted: countless

Number of Whales Spotted: at least 10 so far

Stay tuned for more updates before I set sail from Fremantle, Western Australia to Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia on December 21st!

What a great adventure. So glad to hear things are going well, although 6 m waves sound terrifying. Stay safe out there friend and looking forward to continued updates on progress.

Hello!! So glad to hear from you. Very happy to hear you sleep in a real bed while in port. Apparently you are enjoying this experience which is great. Your adventure is mentioned every month at Happy Hour. Looking forward to the next update.
